their living areas. Kortney has recently learned how to feed all the animals in that same area. Feeding the animals is always so much fun; they really, really look forward to seeing you when you have food!
Like many of our volunteers, when Kortney started she hadn’t really been around farm animals. She was very excited to now have the opportunity. She said, “Being able to be a part of these animals’ lives and fully being there with them and for them was something I always wanted to be a part of.”
When we asked Kortney if she had a favorite animal on the ranch she said, “Oh Man, this is such a hard one. I have SO many favorite animals.” She has a special bond with Lacey, our guardian dog. She also is super fond of Charlotte, one of our large farm pigs. She thinks Charlotte is a “giant sweet gentle soul” and she loves to cuddle with her every Saturday. She also says, “She is my heart.”
For Kortney the best thing about volunteering at Clementine Ranch is being able to do something for someone other than herself as well as to fully bond and be part of these animals’ lives. She says that this has truly changed her life.
We have five female emu on the ranch. If you don’t know what emu are, they are the second largest flightless bird in the world, the first is the ostrich. An emu can look an adult person directly in the eye and they have large prehistoric looking feet. They can be very intimidating if they want to be and they can also be very friendly and sweet. Kortney’s most embarrassing moment involved one of our emu who as of late has been a little intimidating. Kortney told us she has been chased a fair amount by our rooster which in itself is a challenge, but she got chased by Alexis the emu and she screamed so loud one time that she scared herself. Those of us who have experience the “wrath” of Alexis can definitely relate to this.
It’s fun hearing about our animals caregiver’s favorite foods, hearing about Kortney’s will make your mouth water. Hers is, “Hands down a good vegan wing.” She hasn’t eaten meat since she was sixteen years old so she knows all the good vegan spots downtown and “I LOVE me some vegan buffalo wings!”
Besides being an awesome volunteer at Clementine Ranch, Kortney likes to travel, go hiking, reading basically anything that takes her outdoors. She has lived in Alaska and the Pacific North West, which has allowed her to experience all sorts of outdoor adventures.
Kortney told us she loves the ranch and she is so grateful for the amazing people she has met and the animals that have changed her life. We feel the same way about her; we love her and are so grateful for all that she brings to the ranch. She always has a smile on her face and she is such a positive person, she’s a great person to be around.
